Just about everybody in the world knows something about the Battle of Britain - Spitfires, Hurricanes and their pilots pitting themselves against overpowering odds.
Crucial to those battles were pieces of equipment rarely seen these days and this display has been designed to bring together just two of those iconic pieces , the RAF Sector Clock, used in the RAF plotting office to assist in tracking the progress of the incoming enemy, the colour segments denoting the period the enemy was sighted. One or more of these clocks was positioned in every plotting room. Very rarely marked with the station at which they were used in but there is a good chance that any Sector Clock dated 1940 or before witnessed some action during the battle of Britain.
Once the incoming flights were recorded an RAF squadron would be called to scramble. A phone call was made to the ready hut where ,in good weather ,the pilots would be relaxing outside or even playing cricket. The person taking the call would run outside and ring the Scramble Bell to call the pilots and ground crew to action. These Bells were often marked in chalk “DON’T COME AND TELL, JUST RING LIKE HELL”
Cherished Parts have now brought together a Sector Clock and Scramble Bell, both mounted onto a bespoke Stainless Steel support , the clock above the bell and above both of them the profile of a Spitfire breaking away. This is a big display and is made to screw back to a convenient wall in your study or office. Both the Sector Clock and Scramble Bell are original pieces from the period. Those shown in the photo above are a matching pair both dated 1936 and belong to one of our directors and are not for sale but we have other Sector Clocks and Scramble Bells for you to choose from if this represents the historic display you may have been looking for.
2mtr tall overall with the clock having a 46cm (18") face and the bell weighing in at 21kilo
